Big news today — Amazon has launched a free tool that promises to make building an illustrated children’s ebook and posting it for sale on Amazon a simple, intuitive process.

We’ll have more on this soon (including a test drive).  For now, here’s Amazon’s announcement:

Amazon today announced KDP Kids, designed to help children’s book authors prepare, publish and promote both illustrated and chapter books in Kindle Stores worldwide. Children’s book authors can use Amazon’s new Kindle Kids’ Book Creator tool to easily create illustrated children’s books that take advantage of Kindle features like text pop-ups. Once the book is ready, authors can upload it to KDP in just a few simple steps, and use KDP’s category, age and grade range filters to help millions of Amazon customers choose the right books for their kids. Authors can earn royalties of up to 70%, while keeping their rights and maintaining control of their content. Authors can also choose to enroll their books in KDP Select for additional royalty opportunities like Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and access to marketing tools like Kindle Countdown Deals and Free Book Promotions. Get started today at kdp.amazon.com/kids.

Unfortunately the download for the kids book creator appears to be faulty. I tried the download several times, as did other kids authors, each time we were given an incomplete download message.

Downloaded to my Mac and had no problems. Registered for the Kindle program…again no problems. Prepared and imported a pdf to the Book Creator too…very easy and intuitive. Will upload a book to Amazon tonight!

Where can we get help with the illustrations for our books? Is there a good site for free artwork?

      Thank you very much.

Can you use the PDF you export ( I assume it is a PDF) for other distributors like Smashwords?

Once you format the book for Kindle, it will be in MOBI, which is a format Amazon uses. I don’t believe this format works for Smashwords or other distributors. However, you can format your book as a PDF before you convert it to MOBI, and then use that same PDF for other formats.
